How long does metal roof decking last?
The two main UK manufacturers of metal roof decking, Tata Steel and Joriside, offer 25 year warrantees on most of their structural roof deck products. The same applies to the sealants that they also manufacture and supply.
This means that provided the metal roof decking has been installed in line with manufacturer guidelines and properly maintained, you can expect a lifespan of at least 25 years. In reality though, metal deck panels last a lot longer than this, which is why they are popular in industrial builds.

What are the main metal roof decking profiles?
Metal roof decking or metal structural roof decks are made from either galvanised or coated steel or aluminium. There are several different types of metal deck profiles to choose from. However, usually they are trapezoidal profiles. The thickness, finish, and spacing is chosen to fit the span and weight of the roof the trapezoidal profile is designed to support.
You’ll find that aluminium metal roof decking has a minimum thickness of 0.9mm whereas steel metal deck profiles can be made slightly thinner (0.7mm). Although, neither metal deck profiles are usually greater than 1.2mm thick.
The type of metal roof decking that is chosen will depend on several different factors. For instance, load distribution is key as is drainage performance, finish, and integration with the remaining roof structure.

What sizes do structural roof deck profiles come in?
It depends on the manufacturer and the type of metal roof decking profile you require. Typically speaking though, metal deck profiles range from 32mm to 210mm deep and are available in a wide variety of structural liner trays, although spans of up to 7400 mm can be achieved.
As an example, Joriside metal deck profiles range from 19mm to 200mm in depth and provide a structural roof deck for all types of roof systems.
Essentially, profiled metal roof decking provides excellent durable coverage for industrial and commercial buildings when combined with insulation and weatherproof membranes.

Does metal roof decking require maintenance?

Although most steel metal roof decking profiles are either galvanised or coated and carry an extensive warranty of at least 20 years, there’s still a risk of oxidisation, and so over time you will have to check for any spots of rust.
It’s also important to remember to follow the manufacturer guidelines for maintaining structural roof deck profiles. After all, flat seam panels, interlocking profiles, and standing seam metal roof decking profiles will all have their own maintenance requirements.
As a rule though, to keep metal deck profiles in good condition, it’s always a good idea to regularly clean gutters and remove debris.
What is a typical warranty of metal roof decking?
Since Metal roof decking or metal structural roof profiles are made from either galvanised or coated steel or aluminium, they are designed to last a very long time.
Many of the leading manufacturers will offer a warranty of up to 25 years, not just for the metal deck profiles, but for the specified sealants too. Some companies even give a lifetime warranty.
