What is industrial insulation?
Industrial insulation, also known as cavity wall insulation or roof insulation, is a building product used to insulate buildings. Insulation board is used for thermal, acoustic, fire and impact insulation.
Insulation board and cavity wall insulation is required for safety and security, to limit heat loss and make buildings more sustainable.
As you would expect, there are a wide variety of roof insulation products on the market. What is PIR insulation board?
As a material, polyisocyanurate (PIR) is one of the most efficient and cost-effective insulation board materials you can get. PIR is a significant improvement on alterative PUR insulation boards and is manufactured as a foam that is used as rigid thermal roof insulation.
Some manufactures calculate PIR insulation board to be up to 80 times more efficient than other options, making it a popular flat roof insulation and cavity wall insulation.
The most specified PIR insulation board is made from a rigid PIR insulation core that is sandwiched between two high performance aluminium foil facings. What are the benefits of rockwool insulation?
In terms of roof insulation and loft insulation boards, rockwool insulation is a superb option for a whole host of reasons. If you’re contemplating using rockwool insulation over another roof insulation product, here are seven reasons why mineral wool may be your best option:
1. Rockwool insulation is made from minerals (usually volcanic), making it far less irritating and dusty than fibreglass products.
2. Your building will benefit from higher R-values than fibreglass roof insulation
3. Rockwool insulation resists moisture and even repels water so that it does not become absorbent and keeps the roof insulation space drier.
4. It is 100% resistant to rot, mold, mildew and bacterial growth
5. Being non-combustible, rockwool insulation boasts excellent fire resistance
6. It’s easy to fit and therefore ideal for both flat roof insulation and pitched roof insulation
7. It is denser than the more traditional fibreglass roof insulation products meaning it has better thermal and acoustic insulation properties.
Which insulation board is best?
Roof insulation boards are undoubtedly one of the most frequently specified roofing products in industrial construction. However, we such a wide range of insulation board products to choose from, where do you start?
Most people will be aware of the type of insulation board required for their build, whether that be PIR roof insulation, cavity wall insulation, PUR, rockwool insulation or specific insulated panel systems. However, even within those categories there are quite a lot of insulation board and insulation roll products to choose from. So where do start?
PIR insulation is usually used for flat roof insulation or cavity wall insulation. The material offers superb thermal properties, even when the insulation board itself is thin.
PUR insulation is also another option and is available in a wide variety of insulation board shapes as well as foam. Typically, PUR insulation boards are used for floor, roof and cavity wall insulation.
Rockwool insulation is another option where a building may be more prone to moisture. It is used in both flat and pitched roof applications and boasts excellent fire resistance.

How long does cavity wall insulation last?
Generally speaking, cavity wall insulation should last the lifetime of a building if specified and installed correctly. After all, there is absolutely no reason why cavity wall insulation should break down given what it is made from and the fact that it is not exposed to the elements.
The only reason why cavity wall insulation may not last a lifetime is if it has been disturbed by building works and has come out of its cavity. It will then need replacing or topping up.
