How often should gutters be cleaned?
Ninety percent of the time, gutters and downpipes overflow in heavy rain due to lack of maintenance. Therefore, all gutters and downpipes should be routinely cleaned at least bi-annually. However, this completely depends on where your gutters and downpipes are located. For example, if they are surrounded by trees, they may need to be cleaned more frequently.
Essentially, all guttering supplies must be maintained otherwise the manufacturer warranty (usually 20 years) may become ineffective. Worse still, poorly maintained gutter downpipe and connecting roof gutter structures can cause further damage to the roof.
That said, today’s industrial gutters and downpipes and connecting gutter clips are robust. They’re designed to withstand even the most changeable of weathers.

How long should industrial gutters last?
Most industrial gutter systems should last you at least a good 20 years or more, provided they are maintained correctly and regularly cleaned (at least bi-annually and in accordance with manufacturer guidelines).
How long a warranty extends to depends on the product. For instance, the Brett Martin 170mm rainwater downpipe and gutter system, which is made from durable UV resistant deep flow PVC, has a 10 year colour warranty and has been fully tested to BS EN 1462 Load Class H.
Then you’ve got other more domestic grade gutters and downpipes that are made from polyester coated aluminium and designed to last for more than 50 years.
Additionally, there are lots of different single skin galvanised guttering supplies and membrane lined gutters and downpipes to choose from that offer warranties of over 25 years.
What are the options for PVC industrial gutters?

How can you waterproof downpipes and gutters?
There are several options when it comes to waterproofing downpipes and gutters. Most systems will be completely watertight. However, there are several coating guttering supplies you can purchase.
Cromapol, for example, is a superb one coat acrylic roof gutter and downpipe coating product for both flat and pitched roofs. It can be used to instantly waterproof existing gutter downpipe systems. It can be applied to metal, roofing felts, the roof gutter, asphalt, lead, fibreglass, rooflights flashing and even corrugated asbestos.
Even while wet, cromapol provides instant waterproofing and will not wash away while curing.

How often should downpipes be replaced?
In theory, industrial gutters and downpipes should last at least 25 years, if not a lot longer than this. Many high quality industrial gutter systems even go as far as to suggest a lifespan of 50 years or more, provided they are maintained properly.
The UV value of most guttering supplies is very good, even for PVC products where you should expect no colour fading for 10 years.
Of course, how long downpipes last really is a matter of how well they are looked after. Ideally, downpipes should be checked at least once a year and clean bi-annually. This may even need to be more frequent if your building is next to a treeline or there’s a bad bout of weather. It doesn’t take much for debris to accumulate.
